Army Staff Sgt. Girard D. Gass Jr. died August 3, 2014 Serving During Operation Enduring Freedom. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group,Fort Bragg, N.C.; died Aug. 3 in Jalalabad Air Field Hospital, Afghanistan, from a non-combat related incident while on patrol in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan.

Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Basil Plumley has died at Columbus Hospice.  He was 92.  Plumley served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

During the Vietnam War, he was sergeant major of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment commanded by Lt. General (then Lt. Col.) Hal Moore.  The actions of that unit in the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965 were the basis of Moore's book, "We Were Soldiers Once, and Young."  The book was made in to a movie in 2002 starring Mel Gibson.  Plumley was played by Sam Elliot.

The Normandy landings, codenamed Operation Neptune, were the landing operations of the Allied invasion of Normandy, in Operation Overlord, during World War II. The landings commenced on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 (D-Day), beginning at 6:30 am British Double Summer Time (GMT+2). In planning, D-Day was the term used for the day of actual landing, which was dependent on final approval.

UN Partisan Operations

UN partisan operations in Korea began more by chance than from planning. During the retreat in Nov-Dec 1950, thousands of anti-Communist North Korean citizens were left behind to fend for themselves. Facing almost certain death at the hands of the communist invaders, these people fought their way to North Korea's west coast and sailed to offshore islands where they prepared to fight a last ditch battle. The US 8th army eventually learned that friendly North Koreans still held the offshore islands. In January, the Guerilla Section, Eighth Army G-3 Miscellaneous, came into being.

Victory in Europe Day — known as V-E Day or VE Day — commemorates 8 May 1945 (in Commonwealth countries; 7 May 1945), the date when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany and the end of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich. The formal surrender of the occupying German forces in the Channel Islands was not until 9 May 1945. On 30 April Hitler committed suicide during the Battle of Berlin, and so the surrender of Germany was authorized by his replacement, President of Germany Karl Dönitz.
